Loop and Needle Sterilizers and automatic Bunsen burners have been developed to sterilize metal inoculating loops, needles, and test tube openings with or without (depending on the facility) having to use an open flame. Utilizing an electric heat source, using loop sterilizers is not only a safer process, but it is also a requirement in many research laboratories. These devices eliminate hazards to personnel and facilities that are associated with other methods, as well as offer greater user control. Electric heat sources also prevent spatter and cross-contamination.

Additionally, infrared sterilization methods are recommended for use in anaerobic chambers. Loop sterilizers additionally will disinfect laboratory tools that are not sharp-edged, including glass instrumentation such as pipettes, test tubes, as well as assorted metal instruments and other equipment used in research laboratories or for quality control initiatives.

In microbiology, inoculating loops are used to pick up and to transfer a small amount of bacteria that is either growing on a plate or in a liquid culture. Next the sample is spread on a new agar plate. The loop is then sterilized and used again to gather a bacteria sample and to transfer it to a clean agar plate. For the process to be successful, it is imperative that the inoculating loop is rendered completely bacteria-free before taking a fresh sample. To sterilize Inoculating Loops, a loop must pass through the flame (either gas or electric powered) of a burner at an angle until the entire length of the wire turns orange from the high heat. At this point, any and all contaminants on the wire are incinerated.  Next, care must be taken to move the loop, to avoid contamination.
