Measurement instruments for the HVAC industry

Cleanrooms are controlled environments, engineered spaces where filtration systems ensure that pollutants such as dust, airborne microbes, and aerosol particles are greatly reduced to maintain a very low concentration of airborne particles. These rooms are essential to a wide range of industries, chiefly where products such as electronic devices, pharmaceuticals, and medical equipment are manufactured. The goal of maintaining a cleanroom is to ensure that the products manufactured are of the highest quality. Accurate pressure and airflow detection prevent contamination in clean rooms and saturation of air-filters in HVAC plants as well as in pharmaceutical, semiconductor, food, cosmetics, and many other industries as well. Since research and/or development as well as manufacturing facilities increasingly require environments where exacting levels of contamination control are continuously in force, differential pressure instruments, specifically calibrated to register a range of differential pressure readings are deployed.

Given that the objective of a cleanroom is to maintain pollutants within acceptable levels of tolerance, it must also be understood that those parameters will vary between industries. Also, that cleanliness-relevant parameters may also include temperature, humidity, and air pressure to be controlled as required. Differential pressure instruments work by processing the incoming air by means of a series of HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) and ULPA (Ultra Low Particulate Air) filters. Contamination control parameters are gauged by a requirement known as the airborne particulate cleanliness classification. This is classified by specifying the maximum permitted number of airborne particles and divided into 9 ISO classes. Of these, HEPA filters are known to remove 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, as well as any airborne particles up to 0.3 microns in size, whereas ULPA differential pressure filtration systems remove at least 99.999% of all pollutants with a minimum particle penetration size of 120 nanometers, or ultrafine particles.
